“Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” dropped anchor at Cannes

.
The swinest pirate from the Seven Seas, Jack Sparrow, and his crew disembarked last Friday at Cannes Film Festival for the worldwide premiere of Pirates of The Caribbean’s fourth film.

Chameleon-like actor Jonny Depp and Penélope Cruz walked the red carpet to supervise the showing from the last chapter of the pirate series and to win reviewers approval, the actor confessed.

Depp, hiding from behind  his sunglasses, chuckled when asked about the possible harsh critics of the blockbuster: “I've always feared the critics. They really scare me.”

Spanish actress Cruz, who appears for the first time in the Pirates saga, talked about how she showed her most swindler side when performing for her role of Angelica: “I discovered it was this manipulative pirate and a character so full of colors and contrasts and contradictions. I was very happy with the material when I read it. I thought there were a lot of possibilities. It's so much fun to play a liar, because I'm not a good liar in life.”

On this film Captain Sparrow crosses paths with a woman from his past named Angelica  who's trying to use him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. After Angelica forces Jack to board Blackbeard's ship, the Queen Anne's Revenge, he finds himself on a new adventure.

Geoffrey Rush and Kevin R. McNally join once again the adventures of Jack Sparrow. The new faces include British actor Sam Clafin and Astrid Bergès-Frisbey as a mysterious mermaid.

“Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” (Disney) lands in theaters this Friday May 20.

Cannes Film Festival: Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman and Jack Black talk about “Kung Fu Panda 2”

.

Cannes has seen the presentation of another animated film today. Megastar Angelina Jolie turn up the glamour at the Carlton Hotel in the festival accompanied by co-stars Jack Black and Dusting Hoffman at the “Kung Fu Panda 2” (Dreamworks) photocall.

The film director Jennifer Yuh and producer Jeffrey Katzenberg were seen as well as a life sized puppet of a Panda, with which Black was happy to recreate some martial arts movements, while press cameras trained upon him.

Jolie, who gives her voice to a tiger helping the protagonist Panda to find his parents, said:  “I don't see this as a film that's too violent because even in the final battle, it's the inner peace and the way of kind of sending back negative energy that is actually what wins against aggression and violence and war weapons.”

Two women kicked off the festival’s official competition, British director Lynne Ramsay with her film “We Need to Talk About Kevin” (BBC Films) and the Australian writer Julia Leigh who’s makes her film debut with “Sleeping Beauty” (Screen Australia).

Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek open Cannes with “Puss in Boots”

.
Latin actors Salma Hayek and Antonio Banderas kicked off the Cannes Film Festival today with an event promoting the animated 3D film “Puss in Boots”.

Banderas and Hayek captured photographers attention when they walked their way though the red carpet surrounded by a group of flamenco dancers and climbed into a giant pair of boots waving to the crowds.

Málaga actor Banderas who already was the cat’s voice in the animated feature film “Shrek” started dancing with Pitbull’s I know you want me miaowing some notes to promote Chris Miller’s spin-off.

Hayek, who gives her voice to the character Kitty Softpaws, radiated in a Gucci dress saying after escalating the huge pair of boots: “It was a little strange, but I'm just happy I don't have vertigo.”

“Puss in Boots” (Dreamworks) will be released on 4 November in the USA.

Banderas stars in Pedro Almodóvar film “The skin I live in” (“La Piel que habito”), which competes for the Palme d'Or and will be projected on 19 May.

Tate Liverpool to exhibit “René Magritte: The Pleasure Principle” collection

Liverpool’s Tate gallery will display from next summer a rich selection of Belgian surrealist René Magritte’s paintings and some of his little-known commercial art.

Opening on 24 June, “The Pleasure Principle” exhibition will bring together over 100 paintings, some never before seen in the UK, of the 20th century artist and a collection of his unknown photographs and home movies.

The collection, supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and with additional support from the American Patrons of Tate, courtesy of Mr and Mrs Wilbur Ross, examines the artist’s oeuvre from a thematic perspective, displaying works in different media and from throughout his career.

The exhibition will explore in-depth compositional and conceptual devices which are present in his work from the mid-1920s to his death in 1967.

Presented will be classic surrealist images painted in Magritte’s characteristically graphic style, such as word-image paintings and his anonymous men in bowler hats with which the artist has become synonymous.

It will feature iconic paintings, including “The Threatened Assassin” (1927), “The Human Condition” (1933), “Time Transfixed” (1938), “The Dominion of Light” (1950), “Golconda” (1953), and “The Listening Room” (1958), which have become part of the popular imagination.

The gallery will include paintings from his lesser known ‘Vache’ period, erotic works and examples of his commercial designs. Rare photographs and home movie footage will illuminate the life and work of the artist further, providing insights into his relationship with his wife and muse Georgette and his collaborations within the Belgian Surrealist group.

“René Magritte: The Pleasure Principle” is curated by Christoph Grunenberg, director, and Darren Pih, Exhibitions & Displays curator.

The exhibition will open its doors on Friday 24 June until 16 October.

The admission fee will be £11.00 ( £9.00 concessions).
